© Fe rra ta St ort i F ou da tio n and has relatively lower risk of GVHD considering the degree of HLA-mismatch, it is associated with slower hematopoietic recovery and higher risk of graft failure. We reported encouraging outcomes in 104 patients with mature lymphoid malignancies receiving an umbilical cord blood transplant (UCB) after myeloablative or RIC conditioning regimens. Progression-free survival (PFS) was improved in patients with chemosensitive disease, those who have received higher cell doses, or low-dose total body irradiation (TBI) in the preparative regimen. However, there are no data published so far comparing outcomes between UCB and conventional matched unrelated donor transplants (MUD) after RIC for the treatment of mature lymphoid malignancies. Thus, we report here a retrospective analysis comparing outcomes of adults with mature lymphoid malignancies who received a MUD or a UCB reported to the EBMT and Eurocord registries

Alternative donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for mature lymphoid malignancies after reduced-intensity conditioning regimen: similar outcomes with umbilical cord blood and unrelated donor peripheral blood.

We have reported encouraging results of unrelated cord blood transplantation for patients with lymphoid malignancies. Whether those outcomes are comparable to matched unrelated donor transplants remains to be defined. We studied 645 adult patients with mature lymphoid malignancies who received an allogeneic unrelated donor transplant using umbilical cord blood (n=104) or mobilized peripheral bl...

Hemorrhagic cystitis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants is the complex result of BK virus infection, preparative regimen intensity and donor type.

BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic cystitis is a common cause of morbidity after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, frequently associated with BK virus infection. We hypothesized that patients with positive BK viruria before unrelated or mismatched related donor allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have a higher incidence of hemorrhagic cystitis. DESIGN AND METHODS To test this hypothesi...

Comparable results of umbilical cord blood and HLA-matched sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation after reduced-intensity preparative regimen for advanced Hodgkin lymphoma.

We compared the safety and efficacy of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) after reduced-intensity conditioning using either unrelated umbilical cord blood (UCB) donors or matched-sibling donors (MSDs) for 21 adults at high risk with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (UCB, n = 9; MSD, n = 12). Both groups were comparable except for younger age in the UCB cohort (median, 28 vs 42 years; P = ...

Unrelated donor umbilical cord blood transplantation for the treatment of hematologic malignancies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review summarizes the state of the art of unrelated donor (URD) umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) for the treatment of hematologic malignancies and discusses the current issues associated with the use of this hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) source. RECENT FINDINGS In contrast to the very high transplant-related mortality associated with the early experience of U...

A Review of Procedures Involved in Human Umbilical Cord Blood Banking and Transplantation

Cord blood hematopoietic stem cells are widely used as an alternative source for hematopoietic stem cells transplant. Increasing rate of patients who need hematopoietic stem cells transplant and many advantages of cord blood in comparison to bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells, have promoted banking of cord blood units. Cord blood banking requires accurate steps in donor selection, cord blood ...
